We use the SMF exit and MPF message exits to start a batch job that sends email. The exit just passes information about which job abended or had a JCL error to the batch job. The batch job does all the work. It determines if an email is sent, who gets the email and if more serious notification is needed. We have not sent SMS notices yet, but that might be something to consider.
