Well, don't take those names literally. In the very old days CKD became ECKD, but the name "CKD" remain as simple distintcion from FBA disks.

It's sometimes useful to differentiate between "CKD" the track format (Count, Key, and Data), and the original set of "CKD" disk channel commands. "ECKD" identifies extensions only to the CKD command set; the CKD track format itself is the same.
