They seem to trust Amazon EC2 to deliver mission critical systems. Is

I don't have an issue with anyone using FOSS. Software that is - trusting
confidential user/client data to companies subject to the draconian USA data
seizure laws is lunacy. Even European hosting doesn't secure the backups on the
US mainland.
And yes I'm aware the the UK (and Aussie) governments are no better and
certainly in cahoots with respect to things like Prism and XKeyscore.

Would you trust IBM Global Services with your customers data?

gov.uk is the UK governments customer facing website and portal to other services. I'm sure there's no sensitive data about UK citizens stored on EC2.

What impresses me the most is that the UK government has hired some of the best people from the commercial world to build a leadership team to change the culture of government IT. They're using all the cutting edge tools, continuous integration, DevOps etc and have established a culture similar to a big start-up http://radar.oreilly.com/2012/01/with-govuk-british-government.html. Working for the government is now seen as cool! IT graduates are queuing up to work there. It's the IT equivalent to working for the BBC, everybody wants it on their CV.

Another admirable gov.uk initiative is their project to "leave no link behind" http://digital.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/2012/10/11/no-link-left-behind/. Why can't IBM have similar standards? Navigating any IBM website is a minefield of broken links.

Unfortunately Scott McNealy was right all along - just took the rest of a while
to catch on.
