Justice Holmes famously observed that freedom of thought is freedom for the thought that we hate. Equally, it is freedom for the thought that we judge ridiculous. Shmuel thus is and should be free to make himself ridiculous here. Still, it is melancholy that someone who has done good work should have been reduced to such posturing.
