/dev/console is the device for sending messages to the console. You may tailor syslogd.conf to direct the requested messages to that device.. You'll want to be careful what is directed to the console. It's been many years but I vaguely recall some situations where you could flood your console. I think abend analysis came to syslogd but not positive.
