Surely, when comparing technologies hardware and software from other
vendors should not be considered off-charter.

Hmmm...  The PDP-6, for example, had no data channels.  All I/O
was performed by the CPU, usually in interrupt handlers.  And the
hardware architecture was such that such an interrupt handler could
be coded in a single instruction (plus one more to dismiss the
interrupt).  An amusing idea with short life expectancy.
