It wasn't a mainframe hack--we know that. It was a POS hack.

Having said that, it's not impossible that it was able to suck data out of 
(perhaps) a DB2 database on z/OS, from the POS. That seems unlikely but ...

In any case, that isn't a "mainframe hack"; calling it one is like blaming the 
manufacturer of a table after you left your wallet sitting on it unprotected 
and someone swiped it (yes, "table" pun intended!).
