Well, I'm not expert here, but I think I can describe it. SNA terminal
is network terminal (it may be remote), the network protocol is SNA.
Local attached terminal is, for example, terminal attached to 3174 which
is in turn attached via ESCON (or Bus$Tag) to the hsot. Each local
terminal is defined in IODF as device, network terminals are not.
Both network and local terminal won't work without VTAM. Also
IP-attached terminals do require VTAM.
And no one has mentioned that it's possible to log on to TSO
(the posed question) at the "READY" prompt with TELNET, but
without TN3270. (Or is TN3270 part of the TELNET daemon
nowadays?)
Well, telnet and TN3270 are similar, that's all. BTW: "regular
unix-like" terminals can also be attached in other-than-TCPIP way, for
example microlan, LAT, COM (serial) ports, etc.
