I am *ASSUMING* that VPS cuts type 6 records (SMF).
There is a font name in the type 6 records. I would try and extract it from the SMF records. Unless there are multiple fonts per page all bets are off. Figuring out which library the font came from is another task and your solution might be viable. Long ago and far far away I learned the hard way of not doing hat the op did.
