In the past, we needed a protocol for disk storage of magnetic
tape images on non-IBM equipment.  We engaged a contractor.
Evidently neither the contractor nor we did sufficient research;
the contractor designed an idiosyncratic format.

AWSTAPE would have been the most logical choice.  In fairness,
the contractor's design supports some features of alternative
vendors' drives absent from IBM tape drives, but it could have
been a downward-compatible enhancement of AWSTAPE.

I wasn't associated with the effort.  It might not have mattered;
I learned of AWSTAPE only later.
