I do not think Tom's point was that he wished to avoid reading manuals. He was, I think, saying that he did not want or need predictable, generic, boiler-plate responses to his query.
Take more care! Read the manual! and the like are not really helpful. They are entirely understandable responses to some recidivists, but that is not at all the issue here.
