I saw after a brief search will even sell you a 12-core Xeon with Win7 Pro or
Win 8.1 Pro for less than $4,200.

I also stand corrected that there are only 4-core i7 CPU's. I see now that
there are 6-core versions, the i7-3930K for $600 and the i7-3960K Extreme
Edition for $1,070.

However, those IBM prices do mean RD&T is not really feasible for interested
tinkerers. Especially with a 15% annual renewal fee.

OTOH an obvious boon for genuine ISV's (or others with $$$ to spend).

Peter,

The RD&T offering is not really for ISV's, they have PartnerWorld for that (even though ISV's could get RD&T just like anyone else). For me, the breakthrough here is that IBM is agreeing to license z/OS to ANYONE, at prices that rival the middle of the road MSDN offering, AND LOWER than the top 2 MSDN offerings. Over 10 years, my RD&T offering, even with 15% renewal will be less total cost than the 2199/yr MSDN offering. So while TCA is a little higher, TCO in the long run is going to be better. Since I expect to be working for another 15-20 years, RD&T is going to average me well less than 2K/yr.

Tom
