I think "IML" started as "Initial Machine Load" (before Microcode machines, 
360's maybe) and it then transitioned into the "Initial Microcode Load"

I've found that it's seldom worthwhile explaining 'IPL' to anyone who has not 
genuinely sought an explanation. I'm OK with dumbing it down to 'boot', 
although a full explanation must include that bootstrap is step 1 of IPL. Terms 
invented long before Windows was dreamt of. 

I find it interesting that 'IPL', although an abbreviation, is widely used (in 
our world) as both noun and verb with full declension and conjugation, singular 
or plural; past, present, or future. 

BTW isn't 'IML' Initial Microcode Load?
