Adding additional volumes so the file can expand and use them is easy. The hard part is to remove them again once they are no longer needed. This involves backing up the expanded file (assuming that it has been trimmed to remove the extra records) and deleting it. You then remove the extra volumes, redefine the file (now using only 3 volumes) and restoring the backup.
