Better avionics, higher altitude. One of my roughest rides was into Denver  
from Houston on a Delta DC-8.
The thunder cloud tops were so high we couldn't fly over so the pilot flew  
around like the ex-fighter pilot he was. It was like a forty thousand foot  
roller coaster. Lots of flight bags got filled up that night.
