How long did it take? And finally, how did you get production back to the
primary data center?
We had one outage where various managers wanted to pull the trigger,
however we convinced them not to because we were pretty sure the (data)
problem had been faithfully replicated to the DR site.
How to get back is a very good question. How many sites test by running
the real business on their DR site, then replicate back somehow to the
primary site? The lack of a tested plan to switch back to primary would
be a big deterrent.
Also, does DR cover 100% of the business, or just critical systems? E.g.
someone might have decided BAU development is not required at DR,
emergency fixes only, so moving to DR might mean a holiday for most of
your developers. Can you mix and match systems between prime and DR if
you don't move everything? Hard to test...
All these things mean that I suspect most sites would much rather repair
the primary site than switch to DR if they felt the primary site could
be repaired reasonably quickly. But it's a long time since I was
involved in DR planning, so I'm interested to hear if things have evolved.
