Scott,
What ever the machine I have worked on, I have insisted that the CE at least
give me a tutorial on how to do things.
war story:

About 20 years ago, we got a brand new system from IBM (actually a third party)
and I asked the CE as he was finishing up to give me a tour.
After the tour I did a few things on my own and felt comfortable with it.
I held an operator training class with hands on for each of them.
I made sure they were comfortable.

This shop closed down on Saturday and someone came in early to get the online
up. He got one lpar going nicely. The online were up, everything was going
smoothly.
Then he decided to IPL another LPAR. He screwed it up and IPL’d the LPAR that
had the production online up and running.
I had shown them specifically how to do this correctly.
About 5 AM I get a call saying the entire system is down. I go through the
procedure over the phone and he gets the production LPAR up and gets the online
going. I coached him through the ill of the second LPAR over the phone. I did
it step by step with him and told him not to get ahead of himself. He managed
to screw it up again. I told him I would be there in 30 minutes. I hopped in a
TAXI and got to the computer room and people were starting to show up. I got
all the operators together one more time and showed them individually how to do
the procedure.
NOT ONE GOT IT RIGHT.
I got the machine going and the production online systems up and running.
The computer room supervisor showed up and I explained what the operators did
and how I had to come in early to get the systems up.
He was not happy and said it was MY issue. I was not going to make a fuss as
management was showing up.
I went and talked to my boss and told him what had occurred and also the shift
manager issue with me.
I suggested that next Sunday the shift manager come in and I would teach him as
well.
The next Sunday occurs and I went step by step and explained the concepts and
after 2 hours he said he had it down pat. I asked him if he was sure he
understood and he said yes.
The next Monday he comes in early and does the ipl’s himself and he screwed it
up and again I got called in to help him out.
I showed him for the 10th time on how to IPL he says but I followed that. I
told him to try it while I was standing there and sure enough he screwed it up.
It was getting late so I told him to come in the next Sunday and we would go
through it again. The Sunday he went through the procedure and screwed it up. I
was running short of patience but told him one more time and do not get ahead
of yourself. He finally got it right. It was partially his fault but IBM, IMO
made the software that ran the service console was not IMO IBM ready. It was
difficult I will admit but if you followed the procedure I had written down it
was almost idiot proof. The shift supervisor finally got the hang of it.
The service console has been a sore spot ever since, with me.
