I had a customer recently with old switches between z14 and DS8870. Both
ends were rated higher than the switches and demonstrably - from 74-8 -
the links had been negotiated down.

That might or might not matter to you.

Long ago I had a situation where customer was running PPRC at high speed
across town over low-speed fabric. That caused errors and, IIRC, outages.

That probably DOES matter to you.

But, as always, finance might override that.

What are they gossipping about? Certainly the new Multihop feature won't
work on old SAN Switches. That's where you have three switches in the
path.
Ficon has only supported either a single hop or one hop (cascading) up
until
now.

Also, old switches might not support dynamic routing. Old switches may
only
support static switching (port routing on really old switches and the
slightly better device routing on less old switches).

Old switches won't support 16Gbps either so they'll negotiate down to 8 or
lower. That'll depend upon fibre type and distance as well.

I heard some gossips about z14 with new FICON Express16S+ and old FICON
switches. Is it real issue or just FUD to sell new SAN devices?

I have some 5100 switches (8Gbps) and I don't like to replace it just
because it "wasn't certified".

Any clue?
