1. KEY
Nowadays there are two "datasets" using hardware key: VTOC and PDS
directory.
What about other files? Is it possible to allocate new dataset with
hardware key?
According to JCL Reference, KEYLEN keyword can be used for VSAM KSDS or
for non-SMS datasets including BDAM, SAM, BPAM, QISAM (!) and EXCP
datasets.
Is it still supported or just documentation is out of date?
2. How can I recognize the key exist? Will ISPF Dataset Info show such
information?
File Manager? Other tools?
3. LRECL and the kye
Typical physical user record on 3390 track consist of Count field and
Data - the content of the block. Assuming RECFM=F we have physical
record=logical record (Count ignored). That's clear.
What about record with the key? Is it
DATA=logical record OR
KEY+DATA=logical record?
As far as I know, the PDS directory consist of 256-byte blocks, but the
8-byte key is not part of the block. Is it correct?
Or maybe it is 256 bytes including some 8-byte field which is repeated
in Key area?
4. Space utilization
3390 documentation provide track capacity tables, one column is "Percent
Space Used". It seems for, they consider only DATA field as usable data,
the KEY is considered as not usable (liek Count or R0, or gaps).
Of course it is only the table, but shouldn't key be included?
