I can help a little, but please contact Darrell Hawkins at IBM for the
latest wisdom. He'll probably know much more than I do.
IBM Virtualization Engine Enterprise Workload Manager (EWLM) Version 2.1
for z/OS, IBM Program Number 5655-EWM, was withdrawn from marketing on
April 28, 2008. It reached End of Service on April 30, 2009. There was/is
no direct successor, but the concepts and capabilities ended up in the
zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager ("zManager") introduced with the IBM
z196 and zBX in 2010, specifically in the zManager "Automate" tier of
function. The zManager Automate firmware feature is still orderable as I
write this in IBM z13, z13s, z14, and z14 ZR1 models as Feature Code #0020.
OK, that's the good news. There's some not-so-good news: IBM has issued a
Statement of Direction that the IBM z14 and IBM z14 ZR1 will be the last
machines to offer zManager. Also, the z/OS component that integrates with
zManager, the z/OS Guest Platform Management Provider, is only included in
z/OS through z/OS 2.2. z/OS 2.3 dropped GPMP. And while it is apparently
possible to use the Workload Performance Policies across a couple z/OS 2.2
LPARs, without any other operating systems in the mix, I'm not sure whether
it'll provide the functionality you're looking for. WLM offers quite a bit
more function.
Rex, have you investigated a single machine Base Sysplex configuration with
WLM? That's a pretty simple and straightforward configuration, and it'd
elegantly address your requirements if I understand them correctly. And you
should already have everything you need on hand to configure your system
that way. The CTC connections route through FICON, but if you're already
cabled up to switches then you shouldn't even need any more cables.
