Got me, I've never had an issue with a PDS/E in the linklist, PDS/E's for me solved some issues with directory block allocation and having the ability to reuse space, when a member is deleted/modified or added

Indexed directories facilitate searcn. LUW isolation facilitates live update and compress neither needed nor supported?
