However, now we can no longer reconnect to a session when the VPN disconnects,
I'm not a network guy, but I think it depends where the disconnect occurs. If I Alt-F4 my TN3270 session I get an immediate S622. If I lose the internet (over which I connect using a VPN) then there is no feedback to the host that there is any loss of connectivity, and so I can LOGON RECONNECT successfully when I get internet back.
Sometimes I don't lose internet, but I think the organization's gateway does not have a large enough pipe for the network traffic, and so the packet flow between my PC and z/OS ceases so long that my TN3270 client times out, but when it clears I can usually LOGON RECONNECT successfully.
So, IMO, something is telling z/OS TN3270 that the session has been dropped, and so the S622 follows on in quick time. "The fix" you need may depend on what is telling the host that the session has been dropped.
Time for a network trace??? I know it's annoying, so I hope you find out what's going on.
