Ooh, ooh, I know - me, let me tell it! I've been saying "don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs" for years, and am dismayed at the high percentage of hearers, this century, who look at me surprised as though it must be something they didn't expect to hear come out of my mouth, something foul. (No pun intended. Ok, "...or fowl"; there, I said it.) In the old days, when farmers considered it normal and safe to eat eggs raw, the trick was to poke a hole in one end of an egg and a second hole in the other end; you can't suck out the contents if you have just the one hole, of course.
So picture a child learning that for the first time, and then wanting to explain to his elders how it works. But his grandma was sucking eggs maybe more than half a century before this kid was born, so his condescending explanation isn't needed. I get the same shocked look when I carelessly say someone has "shot his wad". Sigh. No one ~reads~ anymore. --- Bob Bridges, [email protected], cell 336 382-7313 /* Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. -Thomas Edison */ -----Original Message----- From: IBM Mainframe Discussion List [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Seymour J Metz Sent: Monday, March 30, 2020 16:39 Not all change is progress. They don't call vi TEFH for no reason. As for regexen, don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs (no, I have no idea where the phrase originated.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [email protected] with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
