Yes, you're right. However I focused on "explicit usage" of UNIX System
Services.
There is some difference between - lest's say CICS or DB2 and batch job
with step invoking some UNIX tools or plain old-fashioned COBOL program
writing to a UNIX file on HFS, NFS or even SMB-served file.
BTW: It was my old joke - to show folks how to edit VSAM KSDS with
...notepad. Yes, it was feasible, with support for EBCDIC/ASCII and
polish codepages.

Just look at the PS screens in SDSF. All of those tasks are using Unix
processes in one way or another.

Other than the implicit use of UNIX by things such as FTP, I mean. In
particular I am speaking of keeping production data in a UNIX file,
rather than a legacy dataset; use of scripting via /bin/sh, awk, or
other, use of any of the BPX* UNIX callable services.
Just curious. I use awk at times for doing stuff in my personal activities.
But my manager dislikes UNIX so I can't use it in any of my "production"
jobs because "nobody knows UNIX" and "everybody knows REXX".
Yes, we use various z/OS UNIX features in batch.
That include UNIX files, UNIX tools, UNIX scripts. I'm not sure about COBOL
code since I usually see compiled modules only.
BTW: Does FTP apply? I was proud author of FTP in batch implementation.
It was 20+ years ago and it was big eyeopener for consultant team. ;-)
