Longwave optical devices will not communicate on shortwave optical
networks without expensive converters, and vice-versa.
If you are connecting into an existing storage infrastructure, you
will need to match whatever is already in use. If you are starting
wholly from scratch, you have the luxury of deciding yourself. My
personal suggestion would be to deploy shortwave unless you have a
specific requirement for which longwave might be indicated.
In my experience, distributed systems SAN (FCP, fibre-channel) almost
always deploy on shortwave equipment. I once had to explain to some
storage guys what longwave was and why they were having trouble
deploying their shortwave SAN to our z800, which had all longwave
interfaces. They had never heard of such a thing and nobody even
thought to ask the question. Eventually we had IBM install some media
converters and things began to work, but still it was an unnecessary
delay.
