Rule !: Buy what the switches on the other end support now. As the new kid on the block, the FCP storage management people won't change their stuff for you. Rule 2: Short wave is sufficient for short distances, but see rule 1. Rule 3: Long wave is sometimes difficult to find connectors and interconnect equipment unless you already have some of it. See rule 1.
