I have a SVM that uses DCSSBKUP to backup to disk files all of the
DCSSes. What I cannot backup this way are the CMS and GCS NSSes. CMS can
be resaved by IPLing 190 with the savesys option after doing a defsys
command. GCS needs to have the nucleus card deck punched to a virtual
rdr and then IPL the rdr. I stole an idea from the installation process
and moved a BLDCMS SVM to first level and then I have an exec that does
the DEFSYS and then xautolog of BLDCMS. CMS gets saved and 15 minutes
later BLDCMS goes away. I mimicked that for GCS by punching a saved GCS
IPLNUC file to a BLDNUC SVM, issuing a DEFSYS command and xautolog that
server. POOF, GCS is rebuilt. What I have not automated is issuing the
DEFSYS and DCSSRSAV commands against all saved DCSSes. I have an exec
that will restore one DCSS and I just run down the FILELIST. Someday I
will automate the complete restore.

With more and more "tapeless" systems, something other than SPXTAPE is
required. As more and more products are delivered electronically, and there
is less need for tape other than backup, you'll see more systems without
access to a tape drive. Only one of my two z/VM systems has access to tape
at all, and getting a tape mounted is an exercise in patience and operator
education. It's not a viable solution for backing up the spool.
What is needed is an SPXTAPE pipe stage where the output or input could be
routed to other media. Or any other useful solution would be acceptable, as
long as it avoids the nasty "T" word.
