... but what's the point of using VLAN unless the mainframe tcpip stacks are 
supporting vlans and the physical switches are aware of the VLANS, and on trunk 
ports? If he just connects on two access ports on the same subnet at least 
he'll get cable pull recovery - even if his z series tcpip stacks are vlan 
ignorant.

That should work, until they can give you a port on another switch to eliminate 
the single point of failure.
