Thanks everyone. It gives me a better understanding what the network folks
need to consider. They have NOT said no but they have been considering it
for weeks. Now I understand that they may have some changes to make for this
to happen so they have to review the impact of these changes.

Except that not everyone connects their switches together with VLAN 
trunks.  You can't just split a subnet between two switches - you have to 
connect the subnets together on the "back end", too.
