Given the reply: >cp query cpcmd shutdown >Command: SHUTDOWN > Status: Enabled Not Silent > IBM Class: A PrivClasses: Z > CMDBK Address: 00A50140 Entry Point: HCPSHUTD >Command: ------------ > Status: Enabled Not Silent > IBM Class: A PrivClasses: A > CMDBK Address: 1AD767F0 Entry Point: HCPSHUTD
And John's reply: No. The ---------- in the response means that version of the command (IBM Class A, PrivClasses A) is not "active". Hypothetically, could one for fun and (certainly not for) profit enter: CP ---------- and watch the system shutdown? :-) Said in the gentlest manner while being extremely grateful for the fact that most VM-related syntax and pubs are justifiably famous for being overtly intuitive: IMHO, the "------------" in the command reply is probably not the most intuitive response. There's a "high astonishment factor" imbedded therein. ... Regarding the "everyone's done it" thread, for valid educational purposes, a history lesson, and as pure entertainment: search the IBMVM list archives on the same topic, visit: http://listserv.uark.edu/scripts/wa.exe?S1=ibmvm (Bookmark that valuable URL for use at a later date!) Then... in the "Subject" box enter: Systems Programmer War Stories in the "Date" box enter: Jan 1997 Click on "Submit" Then follow the thread by clicking on the icon ("lightbulb"+">"). I just happened across it yesterday while searching for Charlotte setup/usage info. Enlightening. Things from which to learn and protect. I heard rumor that one time back in his infancy, someone told Chuckie to "Try entering: ERASE star star A" after which his A-disk was mysteriously empty. Or... maybe that was me that someone told to do that (after I had tediously created dozens of files with hundreds of ZAP statements)? Live, make mistakes, learn.
