I use EXT2 and EXT3 filesystems. The choice of which should be a
parameter to the formatter, leaving the mdisk formatted but without a
filesystem if no filesystem was selected. The no-filesystem case would
be for volumes I want to add to a LVM group.

And optionally, why not put in the correct blocks that mimic an mkfs?
Which fs? ext2? ext3? Reiser? xFS? HamsterFS? etc...
