Long, long ago, at UofW, I wrote an "AUTOCASE" setting. If AUTOCASE was on, but CASE was U, altering a line would examine the line and see if it was all uppercase. If not, it would leave case alone. If it was all uppercase (or all blank, or all non-alpha, anyway), entered alpha characters were folded to uppercase. Made editing things MUCH safer. And since LOWER works, you could even live in CASE U if most of what you were entering was to be uppercase: if something *had* to be mixed, you could enter 1 character, ENTER, LOW, and then hit your CURSOR HOME PFkey (whichever you had it set to) and retype (or, for those of us with a "L" Prefix subcommand, just BACKTAB, type l, hit ENTER, and type).
Another solution, and one that's lower-impact... ...phsiii
