As people were asking about this earlier, to set up scim for dead keys:
- kill all scim processes to prevent scim overwriting what you put in the
configuration
- put a line saying "/FrontEnd/X11/Dynamic = false" into your .scim/config
- set your input method to "English/European" (eg. configure scim to switch
between English/European and Pinyin or English/European and Anthy)
