Thanks Bill and the others with suggestions on how to accomplish this. It's the snap ring I need to attack first I guess and boy am I glad I don't have to rotate the boat 90°! Thanks, this group is the best when it comes to WUICKLY solving [roblems. Now all I need is some dry wealthier so I can get to this maintenance stuff.

The cover is the piece that should say Barient 16. Remove the ring with a screwdriver and be careful to not let it fly off the boat. Not that that has ever happened to me. Carefully lift the drum and cover off the base. The cover and drum are two separate pieces so lift straight up and set it in the cockpit so you don't loose the cover or the two pawls and springs inside the top of the drum under the cover. There are two sets of bearings that should stay on the base but they may come off with the drum so put a hand under the drum when lifting it off if you see that the bearings are not staying down on the base shaft. If you were going to do maintenance you would separate the cover and the drum take out the pawls and spring etc. Now you should be looking at a base with two sets of bearings on a shaft, two pawls and their springs at the bottom of the base. I'd remove the bearings, pawls and springs at this point so nothing goes plunck. Send someone below with a socket and take off the base. These winches can be moved back as secondary winches or forward as cabin top mounts.
