Hi Phil, Do the cockpit lockers on the 270 communicate with the interior of the cabin ?
The doors to the cockpit lockers on my 1977 fit really badly, even when closed. (So does the front hatch) I've seen boats broach and get pinned down coming back through the the Golden Gate Bridge on a windy day. My C27 would take on water like a gusher though those locker covers if she got pinned down on her side. If anybody wants to see boats broaching and getting pinned down for 20 minutes or more, or breaking masts and spinny poles and more on windy days, just come to San Francisco Bay. Sit on the beach near the St. Francis Yacht Club, just inside the Golden Gate, and you'll see a couple of boats getting trashed on an average day when the wind is blowing 25-35 knots and the waves are 6-10 feet with chop. That makes it sound like they are far inboard; I’d guess they are 4-5 feet apart. Lazzerette latches are always a concern. The C270 has three with hasp that turn to latch. I use them like that but in heavy seas they should get a snap hook through the eye. Thinking in the same vein; don’t forget to secure the anchor and anchor locker hatch. I knew a couple who silently had an anchor deploy off Ensenadaon a boat they just took delivery on. I made for an interesting 2-3 hours in heavy seas with a boat that didn’t want to track.
