I went through 4 different helpers on that project…

John,

Well the first that kept me from getting a chainsaw and slicing the whole boat
into bits was that I was blessed enough to have a very patient helper! What we
did was start at one end and push the screws into the screw holes, but not all
the way through. Once all of the screws were in we tapped the track down so
that it was flush with deck. Then we taped all around the track and then pried
it up enough to squeeze the sealant underneath. Then with one person above
deck and one below, we went down the track and put the bolts on and tightened
down the track, leaving a turn or two from the final 'tightness???'. Then we
pulled the tape and went back with an acetone soaked rag to clean up any excess
sealant.

This was how we did it on the last try, attempt # 4 for the first rail. The
first attempt we discovered that we had switched which side the track was being
reinstalled on and the screw holes stopped lining up half way through.
Attempt #2, after switching sides the holes lined up perfectly and as we were
putting the bolts on we realized that last installation(possibly the original
one) the bolts were cut to get them to fit the very small space allowed for
screws. The end of the screws were messed up so much that we couldn't get the
bolts on the screws. So we had to remove ALL the screws, the track and then
clean up the sealant, go to the hardware store and get new screws then start
the process all over again. The third attempt we realized that we needed two
different lengths for the screws, the deck is thicker or there is a greater
space foreward of the 'drain' on the side of the deck near the jib winch, than
there is aft of that drain. So off to the hardware store again!

The fourth attempt on the first track and the first attempt on the second track
went very smoothly though and came out looking really well. I would have taken
some pictures, but do to the mess of the job everything was left in the car
that didn't need any sealant on it.

That whole ordeal took 2 - 10 hour days in 85 & 90 degree temperatures. The
beer stayed cold though! All of the other deck hardware was a piece of cake
after that, and I was able to do all of that myself.

All of this was done with the mast down and a tarp kept over the boat to keep
her nice and dry and she was allowed to dry out all winter long. I still have
to install the windows and the hatch cover before we are going to go back over
every screw and tighten everything up to final tightness and get her back in
the water! Final pictures will be coming soon.

Ivan,

How did putting the jib car track back on go? I pulled my starboard track and
re-bedded it and the 4200 oozed out all over the place and I had to spend a few
hours scraping it out before I could run the car across the track again (and it
is still funky in places). It also took me many hours of cursing and crunching
into un-human positions to get the nuts back on the bottom of all those
fasteners because there is less than 1 nuts worth of clearance between the
bottom of the screw and the top of the side of the hull in some places and less
than a finger between the bottom of the deck and the top of the side of the
hull in others.

I am dreading a repeat performance on the port side but that one is leaking too…

Hopefully you found the magic tip that makes it go back on in an easy afternoon
and not be all screwy when done!

Best,
John

That's what started my 'little project', I had several persistent leaks coming
in from jib car track. So I needed to rebed them, and there were some other
potential spots that I could have leaks coming in, so I decided to rebed all of
my deck hardware. So it all came off and I couldn't think of a better time to
give her a new look, so I decided to do the painting with this project.

The prep is just like any other painting project. Sand and fill to the desired
finish. My gel coat was shot so I didn't care how far down the sanding took
me. Then clean with acetone and paint, sand, clean, paint, sand, clean, paint.

Then I mixed in some antiskid material and put two more coats on any place I
could step on. I didn't sand in between the coats, and it came out looking
great. So hopefully the boat will be drier and safer this season when she goes
back in.

I used Interlux Brightside and an interlux antikid additive. Lots of work, but
she looks great! We'll see about the dryness thougout the season : )

Hope this helps!

-Ivan

Hi,

Off topic I know, but what type of one-part did you use and how difficult was
the surface prep. I have a 1973 c-27(H-929) and I need to rebed all the
hardware and also fix a few soft spots where the chaulk needs replacing. I was
hoping to be able to attemp this without taking down the mast, but I will most
likely do so.

I just painted my whole deck with a one part enamel. Came out looking good, but
I don't know how well you will be able to match the colors.

I'm removing some gear PO's have installed. I'm familiar with epoxy filling but
how do you finish off the job making it look right? For instance there's a
flexible solar panal mounted in front of the mast. I want to remove it and fill
the holes. After filled what do you paint with? Gel coat or something else? I
want it to look as if there never were holes there? Thanks Brandon Snider
