We have a local fiberglass repair shop, Morrison Marine, who does amazing work. Besides all the work the local sailors give Mel, he'll get projects like a new model boat headed for a boat show that didn't pop out of the mold correctly. It's a first off missing a detail with only a sketch of what should have been there.
Anyway as a local Fleet Captain I convinced Mel to put on a class on how the fix such holes. His choice was color matched Gel coat. Obviously he matched his own and on occasion if he was overbooked and you were extreme nice he'd mix you a pint. The factory will also do the same from their records but Mel mated the faded color. I would have though you could see the line knowing where to look but it was just gone. Mel's trick was mold release, Bondo, and a Popsicle stick. Mel finds a spot adjacent to the repair site with the same non-skid pattern (flat is not a challenge), treats it with mold release, applies a 50 cent sized blob of mixed Bondo (polyester automotive body filler), and sets a Popsicle stick in the back of the blob align with the pattern. I've actually done it with MarineTex and Dove bar sticks. After the Bondo cures you have a small area specific non-skid mold. The next step is to Dremel away and existing filler or caulk make a good repair base with something like MarineTex leaving the base a 1/16 to an 1/8 below the surface for the Gel coat. Now take the Bondo mold and check the fit to the non-skid around the hole. Following the Popsicle stick alignment you need to feel it snap into the non-skid pattern. Now you apply mold release to you mini mold, mix the Gel coat, fill the repair site with Gel coat, and press the mini mold pack in place until it snaps in place. When the Gel coat is cured you remove the mold. Phil Agur <http://www.catalina27.org/public_pages/profile270.htm> s/v Wing Tip C270 LE #184 MMSI 366901790
