Hi Bailey, When I purchased Sundance in 1986, it was already documented, and since I had a loan, my bank wanted it to continue to be documented. It took several years for the State of RI to catch on to the fact that they were losing money, so they recently started to require a state registration for boats in RI waters for 30 days or more. Now the only real advantage to documentation, at least in RI, is not needing the state numbers on the boat, just a small "Documented Vessel" decal to prove that the state got their $50 per year.
