Where will you keep the boat? The only marina in DC waters is just south of
National Airport. The MD tax (I think it is now 6%) is worth every penny
in exchange for being able to sail on The Chesapeake Bay as opposed to only
sailing on the Potomac in DC. Also, if I am not mistaken, DC requires a
license to operate any boat; MD only requires if you were born after July 1,
1972. Of course you can sail into MD and cruise the Bay with your boat from
DC but the Potomac is a long river (I sailed it once from Alexandria to
Baltimore). I am sure slip rents are less in DC than they are generally on
the Bay. Obviously there are trade offs for either choice.

That sounds good. I looked it up, and DC will require yearly registration,
but that's only about 25 dollars per year. The big difference though is that
instead of paying the 6 percent excise tax DC would require for initial
registration (not sales tax), I'd pay the one-time flat fee, which is
significantly less. Plus the added benefit of the coast guard's help in
tracking my girl down if she's stolen!

Thanks for y'all's advice.

At least 2 of the 4 C27's here in Louisville are documented one of which is
mine. The 27 barely makes the minimum which I think is 5 Tons. It
computed to about 5.5 and the Cost Guard rounded down to 5 Tons. The
computation is length times beam times depth from the deck to the tip of the

keel. All the forms are available on the Coast Guard website.

For three or four years it was wonderful, no taxes at all. Kentucky finally
caught up with all the documented boats, power and sail so now we pay
personal property tax. Mine is $50 or $60 per year.

Wing tip is documented and as far as I know it is not done to beat sales
tax. We certainly paid it in California.

You document a vessel for insurance; the Coast Guard is obliged to recover a

stolen documented vessel. A vessel with a state tag is the states problem.

There was/is a scam to take foreign delivery and keep the boat out of the
country for several months to avoid paying sales tax but don't get caught. I

think it is now treated as tax evasion or conspiracy to commit tax evasion
if you agree to buy after seeing it in the US and magically don't complete
the deal until after it is out of the country.

Wing Tip makes the tonnage but she is significantly bigger than a C27, so
I'll leave that one to a C27 skipper to answer. It's not a floating
displacement but a total hull volume displacement. You might also look at
the Fisheries database for documented vessels and see if you can find a C27
built before '93 in there.

Subject: [IC27A] Coast Guard Documentation

Hey gang,

I'm a new Catalina 27 owner (well, at least the 1985 boat I bought is new to

me...) and was considering documenting the vessel with the Coast Guard. It
seems that the one-time $133 USCG Documenting Fee would be much less than
the 6% registration tax in DC plus the yearly renewal fees.

Anyway, have any of y'all done this for your 27's? Do the Catalina 27s meet
the tonnage requirements? Are there any pitfalls I should know about?

Thanks, and any advice would be appreciated!
