Northern Minnesota. Custom tarp from Lohman Sails in British Columbia. Frame
is 1" pipe. Rope is run between to prevent sags. Cover uses many zippers and
the mast stays up. Lines are tied to the trailer to snug everything up. Going
on ninth winter and good so far. Tarp on about Oct. 1. Tarp off around April
15th. Without supports the cover goes on in 15 minutes (it works with the boat
in the water too) and comes off in 10. I have a 1995 C270.

For the past seven years I have spread a tarp over the boom, from the mast 12'
back and tied down to the toe rail. It protects the cabin top back to mid
cockpit. More importantly it protects the companion way hatch. I plan to do
the same this year. Not perfect but does an adequate job. The boat is on the
hard in the Middle River. MD area.

Anybody in the warmer (kinda), more southern climate of the Cheasapeake have an
opinion on how mandatory a cockpit tent is? Not nearly the amount of snowfall
as our friends to the north get, but is a winter frame necessary upon haul out?

Thanks,

You asked for it! Worst case scenario. Your cockpit scuppers get ice dammed or
blocked with debris, your cockpit fills with water/slush, the water goes by the
hatch boards and fills your entire boat with water up to the level of the top
of the cockpit coaming. Your inboard is ruined, as is your entire interior. You
will likely cause structural damage to your hull.

I was hoping for some advice regarding the construction of a frame to support a
cover for winter storage. I am also curious if most feel a cover is mandatory
in the north (snow, ice, long winter!). What is the worst case scenario if no
cover is in place? Thanks
