You should be aware that either device changes how you sail the boat. Normally a cruiser doesn't vang very often letting the weigh of the boom and the sheeting tension the leech. Once you install a boom kicker or a rigid vang the weight of the boom is gone (neutralized) which is great in light air but it is gone all the time so your vang becomes a very active control. One thing the racers all know that escapes a good deal of cruisers is the best way you hold trim in changing conditions is to have very low stretch sails and running rigging. When your boom vang moves over to being a very active control your only defense to being nagged by a poorly shaped sail is cerveza or very low stretch lines in the vang.
