Mark,

Known, local, or discount all depends on your intentions. If you are going
to race in a local fleet the best advice is to look at who's winning and
what they are using. It sounds simple but there can be a lot subtle details
you might not garner from a water cooler conversation at the YC. Which ever
path you choose remember your task is to present the sail to the wind in the
manner intended by the sail designer for optimal performance. That can give
a locally known and trusted sail maker an edge. Even though North doesn't
have a local loft they do have a local rep so they enjoy that same face to
face edge.

If you're in the stock cruising market don't overlook calling Catalina
Yachts. They are still in the business of creating happy owners and as the
largest sailboat manufacturer in the country they supply a lot of sails.

I am going to buy a new main for my 81 C27 before spring rolls around and
while the special prices are on. Any suggestions on who makes a good main
for a reasonable price. I think North Sails are rinning around $700.00 but I
have seen some sailmakers selling them for around $600.00 Am I better off
going with a known sailmaker? Any input would be appreciated.

oops.

Okay as I was saying.

1. try to sell them on ebay, your local marina, yc.
2. if they have some life left sell them to a used sailboat parts store such
as bacon's in annapolis.
3. some people use old sails to make stuff such as duffle bags, jackets,
etc. if you are industrious. (resails, inc)
4. you could have them dry cleaned, repaired, and refurbished. They will
never be racing quality again, but might be nice to have a second set.
(sailcare, inc.)

I have a older main and and jib that are not being used. They may not be in
the best of shape. Does anyone know if there is a market for old sails?
