When I looked for a Catalina 27 in the winter of 2006/07 (I saw many boats with blown A4s and outboards hanging on the stern. The boat I finally decided on was an ’81 outboard model with a custom bracket to hang the 9.9 Honda on. The boat performs great with the outboard and I think it was the right decision for The Chesapeake Bay. But I would add that if I moved up to a bigger boat I would get an inboard.

We had it removed, as it was pushing the aft end 6" down into the water. We have a 1992 Yamaha 9.9 hp 4-stroke on a bracket, with a 6-gallon plastic auxiliary fuel tank (plus an additional 5-gallon lawnmower-type fuel tank). We can go 4.5 knots all day long while using 1/2 gallon per hour - we can exceed 5 knots with the engine opened up all the way. We'll never reach hull speed with this motor, but it's quiet, fuel- efficient and reliable. To keep our batteries charged, we leave small solar trickle-chargers out in the cockpit while we're away and use either a generator or shore power to operate our battery charger. We also now have a nice storage area (where the A4 went). We stow the generator and a 135 amp-hour deep cycle battery down there - the battery runs all sorts of things, from my wife's laptop to fans to my CPAP machine (I have sleep apnea). All in all, a 9.9 4-stroke is a perfectly adequate powerplant for a C27. And, the new ones will put juice back into the batteries while they're running, according to a salesman at the Baltimore boat show. Fair Winds to you & enjoy your C27.
