I agree. I used a marine, silicone-based, nonskid polish on an old boat
seven or eight years ago. Eventually, it needed new paint. I was never able
to get paint to stick properly, even though I used a lot of acetone to
prepare before I painted. It became a major headache of constantly repairing
the paint job.
Personally, I will never use any type of wax or polish again on a boat
surface. My current boat has 15-year-old Awlgrip. Up close, you can see
some scratches and fading. From 15 feet away, the topsides just look blue.
That's good enough for me. Redoing the brightwork gets me many more
compliments than washing the topsides.

In my experience, "marine" just means "more money" for near, if not the same
product. I just use the same stuff I use an my truck. Dawn dishwashing
liquid and a decent car wax. Just be careful with the buffer and a polishing
compound, gelcoat is softer than a car finish.
I would, however shy away from anything silicone based (the "wipe on. wipe
off" stuff advertized on TV). As mentioned above, gelcoat is softer as well
as more porous than a car finish. The silicone will give you problems if you
ever have to patch a ding or repaint the boat.

Anyone have any thoughts they'd like to share on how to clean and wax the
C27 hull, and what products you'd suggest? I'm entering my 4th season as
owner of Eos, and have never cleaned or waxed the hull. There are brown rust
stains (ubiquitous from the Chesapeake environs) I'd like to remove, and
undoubtedly some oxidation that could use buffing. I'm thinking of getting
an orbital random buffer and pads to do the buffing/waxing job, and I could
use some tips.
