Bolt stuff down not just to discourage the thieves. The storm winds can blow anything that's loose right off the dock and into the water. I've had to fish my patio chairs and tables out of the drink 5 or 6 times now. It's gotten better since we upgraded to heavy wrought iron furniture, but we continue to lose light stuff we forget to secure before a storm.

As an aside to security precautions~I went to the marina on Sunday, and found my entire dock box was gone! The last time I came in to dock, my crew jumped off the boat and onto the dock box, tipping it, so it ripped the fiberglass flooring--it was no longer bolted down. I did not immediately attend to it, as, gee who would steal a dock box??? I was at the boat a couple of times to check and make sure the boat was dry, but I can't even rember the last time I "looked" for the dock box... Well over the winter, some one did take it, and no one saw a thing...so..bolt them down! Pam

Hi Larry,

Sound observation. On most boats, security is nigh impossible to achieve. But for insurance purposes, we have to make the effort. Otherwise it's like leaving your car running while you go into a 7-11.

BTW, no such think as an ex-New Yorker...just like there are no ex-Marines or former Eagle Scouts<G>.

I'll assume there are no potential thieves out there and give you a hint about how worthless most padlocks are. If you take two large screwdrivers, insert them at opposing 45 degree angles through the shackle, and quickly jerk them to the opposite position, you will pull out the shackle of all but the very best locks. Don't ask me how I know.
