I've seen this done, Fabricate a "sight glass" much like a coffee urn has. Couple of copper fittings and some clear tubing from Home Depot. Can't be more than 20 bucks worth of parts.

Note the list is sorted by price. Also note the link near the top that says "senders" to look at the sending units needed when working with a gauge.
