Not familiar w/ the 270 but yes, in general terms you ideally want to mount
the fluxgate low and in the center. The compass can be "compensated" for
large metal objects but electric motors(and other stuff like speakers) whose
magnetic fields change when they are on or off should be avoided even if you
have to mount the unit somewhat "off" of centerline. I've had good luck
mounting them as far as just under the rail. Rolling motion doesn't seem to
affect them as much pitching. Either way, I would look for a place that is
as far away from electrical/electronic components (as opposed to just metal
stuff) as possible, even if it means moving away from "center". You, most
probably won't notice the "degraded" performance from not mounting the unit
in the "ideal" spot

Subject: [IC27A] Raymarine X-5 Installation

Hey folks,

I installed a Raymarine X-5 Wheel Pilot on my Catalina 270 this past
weekend. In addition to figuring out that the wires for the wheel motor are
incorrectly diagrammed in the manual, I still have compass problems.

I am pretty sure it's because I installed it only a few inches from the
macerator, although there aren't too many great spots to put it.

Has anyone installed the Fluxgate compass for this model or any other model
autopilot on their 27 or 270? If so, I'd love to hear suggestions about
where you mounted it to get the least bit of magnetic interference as well
as the least amount of pitch and roll.

Many thanks,

Mike Keller
