Alon,

I'd use a patch and cast a few stitches at the ends of the tears. Glue there
(or 5200) would be a good idea too.
Whether a patch or edge sewing, Be sure to fold the edges under so no raw edge
of the fabric , either on the sail fabric or the patch, is seen.
ZigZag stitch the entire length with some overrun..at least 1/2 inch..
Don't forget to Back Stitch to "lock" the sewing..

DO use a thinner needle than might be used in Sail material...
As far as thread,
Make sure the thread is a man made fiber.. For nylon, I like the so called
"invisible" thread. It's Mono filament line.. Like Fishline..(which could be
used)
Just be sure it's.... NOT cotton or linen...

Best Regards,

Ralph

      Thank you Ralph
The rips are 3- 5 " long. I have hand sewed the heavier material of the
main sail but didn't feel comfortable sewing through the light weight material
on the spinnaker. I guess a lighter thread would be required and on that
length tear would you consider sewing the ends together or adding a overlapping
patch for reinforcement?

Sewing is always the "Best".. either overlap the tear or Patching..
ZigZag stitch if possible....
Almost any home sewing machine should work.. The problem here is the
space to do the sewing.

But there are other methods.. One Quick and easy Non-sewing method ..
Depending on the size and condition of the tear..

        Believe it or not.... 3 M 5200 ....

A thin coating of 5200 on one edge and length of the tear, Overlap the
fabric and allow to cure. 5200 will hold the material nearly as good as a
sewing.
If the tear is too large to overlap cleanly... Then you'll need a
Patch of similar fabric (Ripstop Nylon ? )...
Again, if sewing can't be done, Try the 5200 method... A thin
layer of the sealant on the edges of the patch and apply to the torn area..
Allow curing before flying the sail

Hi all, I have a couple of tears in the light weight sail material of
my asimetci spinnakers and was wondering what the best method for repair would
be? Thank you in advance.
