I purchased the ball-bearing option with my CDI furler on my C-27 tall rig. 
 I really believe that the ball bearings help reduce the furling effort  
especially if you find yourself furling in building winds.  You may plan to  
only sail in moderate winds but I know that where I sail on Lake Erie we are  
lucky to get a 30-minute warning of an approaching summer squall.
