That's Bacon's in Annapolis... egregious grammatical errors... :-)

      John,

I sail out of Annapolis.  Even with the ball bearing I sometimes need to use a
winch.  Bacon's in the should have the ball bearing option in stock.

Well I'm sold on the Ball Barring option. Now that I think of it, that first
time the wind really kicks up, I'm sure I'll be glad I got it. Thanks for all
the input.
Also,  what is the Mainstay length for a 1976 Std. rig? Not sure which  size
CDI Furler I should get.
thanks,

In process of buying my C30 we had sea trials out of Ventura, CA.  Wind was

15 - 20.  Didn't know it at the time but had the CDI roller furler.  After sail
with 150 genoa
tried to roll it up.  One guy coudn't do it.  Broker and I heaved with all we
had and
couldn't roll in finally had to use winch.  Back at dock I suggested we needed
to
"oil" assy to free it up.  Broker agreed...... ....Finally when found out what
I had called
CDI and ordered the ball bearing assy.  Installed it and life much easier after
that.
Get the assy.  At that time - nine years ago - was hundred bucks.  Otherwise
you
are rolling the thing up on a hockey puck.

My decision to get the ball bearing assembly was based on "when  you need it,
you need it"  thinking.  I am sure most of the time one would do fine without
it.

Is the Bar-bearing upgrade for the CDI necessary if 99% of your sailing is just
cruising in moderate to light winds? Anyone using the non-grade version?

Also, what is the Mainstay length for a 1976 Std. rig?

-thanks

The nice thing about the CDI set up is that you can keep your existing
forestay.  No need to purchase a $200 worth of special terminals... etc..

Definitely buy the ballbearing upgrade though...

Agreed.  I put a CDI on my tall rig and have been very happy with the
performance and value.  It took two of us to install it but it was pretty easy
to do.  I can't remember where I bought it but a web search will help you
compare prices.

The CDI system is probably the least expensive.  I bought mine from Bacons in
Annapolis for about $600 a few years ago.

I replaced my factory original roller furling with one from Cruising Design. It
was relatively simple to install by following the accompanying instructions. It
has worked flawlessly for the 14 years. It is one of the lower cost systems
available. My boat is a tall rig made in 1986 and I do primarily day sailing on
Lake Erie.
